Flares: Tattoos, Spray Foam Insulation, and Birria

Amy McMillen

While the quarantine-inspired DIY tattoo trend may have peaked last May, people’s interest in getting inked continues to skyrocket.

Google search interest in “tattoo shops near me” is at an all-time high, with a record 1.7m+ searches this month so far, according to Keywords Everywhere.

A central component here is community, as demonstrated by niche and local Facebook groups:

Opportunities abound spanning tattoo designers, lovers, and first-timers alike. You could create tattoo design courses based on specific tools or styles (Procreate for Tattooers, a group for designers to share their artwork and tips around the illustration app, has 26.6k members).

Since many tattoo artists have cult followings (Keith McCurdy of bangbangnyc has 2.4m followers on Instagram), you could provide design templates, merch, or even “clout kitchens” for their audience.

You could also create an app to better connect global designers to local practitioners. Inkhunter, an app that allows you to preview designs on your body, had 100k downloads last month, according to Sensor Tower.

Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation, a liquid material that immediately dries and seals wherever it is applied, has exploded in popularity in recent months.

The material has benefited from the home improvement boom and found new applications in arts and crafts.

TikTok has recently showcased creative ways to use spray foam for DIY decorating. The tag #foammirror, which spotlights mirrors with a spray foam border, has nearly 33m views.

Related search interest has peaked on Google as well. Monthly search volumes, according to Keywords Everywhere:

  • “Spray foam insulation near me”: 18.6k
  • “Spray foam insulation cost”: 14.8k
  • “Spray foam insulation DIY”: 6.8k

Keeping with the traditional insulation application, you could create expert content in DIY installation and maintenance (this YouTube tutorial is just shy of 3m views).

You could also provide a hyperlocal, niche version of Home Depot’s Tool Rental, since installation equipment can be an expensive one-time cost. On Amazon, an insulation kit including a hose, gun dispenser, cone nozzles, fan nozzles, and wrench puts you back $764.95 (all of which besides the foam itself is reusable).

With surging interest in spray foam art, you could capitalize on building craft or sculpture kits and tutorials. Art subscription products are still popular (we predicted Let’s Make Art makes at least ~$1m in MRR). With spray foam being such a versatile material like clay or resin, the creative opportunities are endless.

Birria

Birria, a meat stew originally from Jalisco, Mexico, is seriously spicing up the food scene. A combination of meat, sauce, and spices, the dish is often deconstructed to pair with tacos, pizza, or quesadillas, raising one-pot cooking to the next level.

Birria references in Yelp reviews climbed 235% in 2020, with Yelp predicting more birria-inspired dishes to continue appearing in menus.

Birria searches have also reached all-time highs this month, according to Keywords Everywhere:

  • “Birria tacos”: 841k
  • “Birria tacos near me”: 300k
  • “Birria recipe”: 25k

Outside of restaurants, the Mexican dish is flavoring home cooking as well. On TikTok, yummy step-by-step shots under #birria have amassed 322.6m+ views.

Remember, food trends tend to stick around, as our Signal on hot chocolate bombs showed.

You could capitalize on the craze by creating birria meal kits, including spinoffs with other foods like pizza, ramen, or salad.

You could also create a birria spice, as seen with the rising popularity of D2C ethnic spices (Fly by Jing, a Sichuan Chili Crisp, makes $46k+/mo on Amazon alone, according to Jungle Scout).

Since birria is a traditional Mexican dish, you could offer virtual cooking classes paired with other educational opportunities around food and culture, a combination that Chris Scott, a chef at the Institute of Culinary Education, is bullish on
