Flares: Breathwork, Space Porn, and Boho Decor

Breathwork and the Unbundling of Mindfulness

Breathwork is poised to be the next breakout star of the wider mindfulness movement.

While participation in the practice has been on a steady upward trend in recent years, search interest in related terms is peaking in 2020, according to Keywords Everywhere (apparently some of us are having a stressful year… ).

  • “Breathing exercises” peaked in April (572k searches)
  • “Wim Hof breathing how to” peaked in October (154k)
  • “Deep breathing” peaked in May (81k)
  • “Holotropic breathwork” peaked in October (55k)

There are plenty of opportunities to capitalize early, borrowing from the billion-dollar yoga and meditation industries. Think apps, retreats, books, classes, studios, and even “breathwork buffets” to replace breakfast spreads (sorry ), per a recent report where we’ve found opportunities galore. Don’t be afraid to go niche, either:

  • “Breathing exercises for yoga” (8.1k searches/month)
  • “Breathing exercises for asthma” (7.9k)
  • “Breathing exercises for COPD” (5.4k)
  • “Breathing exercises for sleep” (5.4k)
  • “Breathing exercises for stress” (2.9k)

Space Porn Subreddit Skyrockets

Source: Subreddit Stats

When you signed up for Trends, I bet you didn’t expect regular recommendations for exploding porn niches. In August we served up a Map Porn subreddit with 1m+ subscribers. Today’s not-so-naughty find? Space Porn, a subreddit “devoted to beautiful space images.”

With interplanetary travel just around the corner and the discovery of planets that are more habitable than Earth, it’s not surprising that interest is skyrocketing -- there are already lots of space blogs and even space influencers.

Space Porn’s rise suggests there’s demand for space content dosed out in bite-sized clips and pictures (similar to r/educationalgifs and r/gifrecipes), as opposed to long-form text.

There are opportunities to deliver content straight to people’s inboxes or to create non-galactical products inspired by beautiful space images, such as jewelry, coasters, maps, lamps, engravings, wood cut-outs, coloring books, tablecloths, or sculptures.

Boho Is Oh So Trendy

Source: Keywords Everywhere

Boho is back, and it’s in your bedroom. While the term may bring to mind images of  flowing skirts and peasant blouses, a more recent trend towards boho-inspired decor is on the rise (#bohodecor has almost 2m posts on Instagram).

This trend intersects nicely with a wider covid-induced increase in home decor sales as people spend more time at home. It creates opportunities for entrepreneurs to provide high-end DTC boho homeware from rugs to throws to wallhangings.

You might take inspiration from Sam’s mother-in-law, who’s making bank selling premium pillows.

(s/o to Trendster Jaan Juurikas for putting this flare on our radar.)
